Once willow is cut and brought home the work is not finished. As each stool produces willow of different lengths and thickness I will go through each bundle to grade them by size. This means I put a bundle in a barrel, with a measuring stick beside it. First I take all the longest rods out, and put those on one pile. And work my way down from there making bundles by feet. This means all the rods longer then 8ft go on one pile, all the rods between 7 and 8 ft go on the second pile etc etc.

Most rods once graded this way will be of similar thickness too. I also keep all the varieties and colours in separate bundles so when it comes to the time to soak my willow I can easily take out what I need.

In this video you can see me go through the grading process. Enjoy!
