Weaving can be done with materials other then willow off course even though willow is easier to work with on many levels. But sometimes it can still be fun to use different textures and try out what else is available in your local area.
In this video I weave a simple Catalan platter from wild willow, larch, dogwood, ivy, honeysuckle, beech and spruce twigs. But once complete more plants would jump out at me that I also could have used like rose, briars (remove thorns), flag iris leaves, birch, lime,… The possibilities are endless!
If you have children, or grandchildren, this project is ideal to teach them local plants and trees and then to weave a simple project with them.
You can use this tray to serve food or as a lovely feature on the wall.
Have fun exploring your garden and local hedges and weaving it into your own masterpiece!
